Professionalism refers to the conduct, qualities and behaviours that characterize a member of a profession. For medical laboratory scientists it is reflected in the following areas:
1. Competence and skill: Mastery of venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, Knowledge of patient’s preparation, correct site of selection and order of drawing, accurate specimen handling, labelling and transportation to prevent errors and use of sterile equipment and adherence to infection prevention and control measures.
2. Effective communication: Introducing oneself politely and explaining the procedure in simple reassuring terms, obtaining patients cooperation particularly with anxious, pediatric or elderly patients and listening actively to patients concerns respectfully.
3. Confidentiality: Respecting patients privacy by keeping test results and requests confidential, not releasing patients results to family members or religious leaders without their consent.
4. Confidence: it is important to maintain a calm and confident demeanor. This will help the patient trust you and your ability to carry out your responsibilities effectively.
